Toronto, ON
Inuit Futures was happy to support three Insipire Nunavut alumni, Nevee Padluq, Martha Neeveacheak, and Sarah Long, and instructor Cora Kavyaktok to attend Indigenous Fashion Arts 2024 in Toronto from May 30th to June 2nd. Joined by Heather Igloliorte, Alysa Procida and Arnatsiaq Qvist, the group attended panels, workshops and the runway shows. Here is what participants had to say about the experience:
“To see how successful so many Indigenous peoples are in so many different parts of the fashion industry sure makes me feel like we are on a great path to resilience.” - Sarah Long
“I cannot believe our fellow Inuit designers are making the runway shows these days! Very inspiring and makes me want to keep designing my own work as well.” - Neevee Padluq
“It was amazing to see a lot of people being able to be themselves and to wear what they want without hesitation and all the Indigenous cultures working side by side and cheering for each other made it so emotional and inspiring.” - Martha Neeveacheak
“After attending the panel on "Mindful Merchandising: Reframing Value in a Consumer Culture," with speakers Chelsea Pettit and Randi Nelson, I realized that my creations should truly be about what they are, rather than something I want to produce solely for selling. “ - Arnatsiaq Qvist
